When it comes to running a successful restaurant, having a memorable and effective tagline can make all the difference. Think about some of the most iconic brands in the world, and you'll likely have a phrase associated with them pop up in your head. But before we get too far, let's take a step back and look at the basics.

What is a tagline?

A tagline is a short, memorable phrase or slogan that is used to sum up the core message or benefit of a brand or product. Taglines are often used in advertising and marketing materials to help customers quickly understand what a brand or product is all about.

Examples include:

  • McDonald's: "I'm Lovin' It"
  • KFC: "Finger Lickin' Good"
  • Grill'd: "Healthy Burgers"
  • Guzman Y Gomez: "Authentic Mexican Taqueria"
  • Nando's: "Flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken."

10 elements to make your own tagline

So how do you do the same for your venue? There are 10 elements that go into creating a memorable tagline, so let's run through those and then you can start brainstorming to find the perfect line that encapsulates the essence of your brand and helps customers remember your venue.

Here are the 10 elements of a good restaurant tagline.

Brevity - Less is more

Good taglines should be short and to the point, ideally no more than a few words. A shorter tagline is easier to remember and repeat.

Clarity - Clear things up

Your tagline should clearly communicate what your restaurant is all about. It should be easy for customers to understand and remember without any second guessing.

Emotive - Build a connection

A good tagline should evoke a positive emotion in the customer. This could be anything from excitement to comfort, but it should make them feel good about your restaurant and brand.

Unique - I'm enjoyin' it

Your line should set your restaurant apart from the competition. It should be unique and memorable without leaning too hard into anything that's been done before.

Relevance - Keep your purpose clear

A good tagline should be relevant to your restaurant's concept, atmosphere, and target audience – anything that deviates too far may confuse potential guests.

Call to action - What do you want customers to do?

Does your line inspire customers to take action? Whether it's visiting your restaurant or trying a new menu item there should be something in there that pulls people in and puts bums on seats.

Timeless - Look inwards

Your tagline should be timeless and not tied to a specific trend or season. It should have lasting appeal beyond flavour of the month.

Memorable - Catchy is good

A good tagline should be memorable and easy to recall. It should stick in the customer's mind long after they've left your restaurant.

Simple - No brain teasers

The line should be simple and easy to understand. It should be accessible to a wide audience. In-jokes have their place, but don't alienate people!

Brand consistency - The golden rule

Every brand element, especially your tagline,  should be consistent with your restaurant's overall brand message and identity. If you haven't done this yet, now is a good time to start!

By incorporating these 10 elements into your tagline, you can create a phrase that encapsulates the essence of your brand and helps customers remember your restaurant. Good luck, and have fun with it!
